Some of my out-of-town friends ask me which of the DFW malls are the best to visit when they come in for a shopping weekend. That's kind of like asking, "Which of your children do you love the most?"

Class Tracking in QuickBooks is a way to break down different segments of a single business. Let's say, for example, that you own a chain of restaurants. You have one in the north part of town, one on the south part of town, one in the east part of town, and one in the west part of town. You could establish classes with the following names: North, South, East, and West, and assign these to each transaction - writing checks, entering bills, generating invoices, etc.

If you want to see how of all the restaurants are doing as a group, you would run a regular Profit and Loss. But if you wanted to see how a particular restaurant was doing, you would still run a Profit and Loss, but you would filter it by Class. This report would give you the revenue and expenses for whichever class you chose, assuming all of the original entries were made correctly. Very nice!

What Types of Accounts Can Use Class Tracking?

Class Tracking is designed for Profit and Loss transactions, not for Balance Sheet transactions. On most screens it is very easy to tell if you are operating in a profit and loss transaction, or a balance sheet transaction with classes. Let's take the Write Checks screen. You are familiar with both halves of this screen, no doubt. There is the upper half with the green "check," and the lower half, with two tabs that say Expenses and Items in a white field.

If you have class tracking turned on in QuickBooks, open the Write Checks screen (from the banking menu, select Write Checks). Take a moment and look where the Class column is located. It's in the lower half of the screen. The upper half of this screen is definitely a balance sheet transaction - it takes money away from the bank account. The lower half of the screen is often a profit and loss transaction. And it is in this section where the class is assigned.

The same holds for the Enter Bills screen. Open it now and see (from the Vendors menu, select Enter Bills). In the Invoice screen, it is is a little more difficult to understand, but still, the class assigned here will affect a profit and loss account.

Can I Have Separate Companies in a Single QuickBooks File, and Assign Each Its Own Class?

No. Each unique entity, with a unique FEIN, must have it's own file.

I've often seen questions from people who have set up different companies in a single QuickBooks file, and assign a class name for to each company. At some point, the business owner inevitably wants a class report based on the balance sheet for each company - the bank accounts, accounts receivable, credit cards, accounts payable, etc., all broken down by class. QuickBooks Class Tracking cannot do this, and was not designed for this!

Another problem with establishing different companies within a single QuickBooks file is that ownership across the companies might not be the same. Retained Earnings for each company cannot be separated (at least, not automatically by QuickBooks). Maintaining separate Retained Earnings is crucial if the ownership across the entities varies AT ALL.

Also, if the entities are corporations, preparing the corporate tax returns becomes a real challenge if they've all been setup into a single QuickBooks file. There's just no way to have QuickBooks breakout the separate balance sheets that are required for the tax returns.

What Should I Do If I Have More Than One Company in a Single QuickBooks File?

You will need to separate them into separate QuickBooks files. I know, I know - you don't want separate QuickBooks files! I understand. But that is the way it needs to be - truly! If you need help doing it, go to the Intuit website and find a QuickBooks ProAdvisor to help. This is a sticky situation and should be handled by somebody who understands accounting principles.

6 Must-See Dallas-Fort Worth Shopping Malls

It's hard for me to choose, since they each have a particular atmosphere, unique combinations of merchants, and even architecture.

Yet my friends would be expecting me to answer their question and help them out. As their friend, I would do my best. So I'm going to do my best for you.

We looked at things like architecture, variety of merchants, number of perimeter stores, but I also considered the "WOW" factor. It's about an experience, not just shopping. So here is our opinion of the 6 must-see shopping center malls of DFW; 3 in the Dallas area and 3 in the Fort Worth area, in no particular order:

Galleria Dallas (Dallas area - Dallas): For sheer "Wow" factor, Galleria Dallas is impressive. Modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, Italy, it's four levels ooze élan and luxury. There are one-of-a-kind high-end stores, but also a good variety of mainstream merchants.

Stonebriar Centre (Dallas area - Frisco): Stonebriar may have the most interesting exterior architecture of any shopping center mall in DFW. This open, bright mall has it all, and has the most children's apparel merchants of any other mall.

Town East Mall (Dallas area - Mesquite): Town East is instantly recognizable by its large center structure that covers the center part of this huge shopping mall. Remodeling in 2005 added many stores and updated the interior. Town East resembles a large wheel, with the Food Court its center hub.

Grapevine Mills (Fort Worth area - Grapevine): Grapevine Mills has more merchants than any other shopping mall in DFW - 237 of them! If you can't find it here, it probably isn't made. Wear comfortable shoes, as the rectangular concourse is almost one mile around.

Southlake Town Square (Fort Worth area - Southlake): Although not an enclosed mall, it's uniqueness makes it an experience unlike any other in this list. Southlake Town Square is designed to resemble a small town square, with the stores branching off onto small side streets. The best way to enjoy Southlake Town Square is to park your car, and take your time walking around, soaking it all in.

The Parks at Arlington (Fort Worth area - Arlington): In 2002, The Parks added 400,000 square feet of space, making it one of the largest shopping malls in DFW. More than just a place to shop, The Parks is a place to have fun, with an ice-skating rink, theaters and a carousel ride. Traffic around The Parks can be heavy at times, but the trip is worth it.

There are our top 6 recommendations - now it's time for you to hit the mall trail and have fun!

The northerly states of New England offer some of America's oldest history and the fall foliage colors are legendary. Boston has a compact historic center which can be explored by following the red line of bricks around the main sights. The Mid-Atlantic States of New Jersey and New York draw thousands of international visitors each year to see the sights of New York City. Luxury hotels in New York City can be found on every block and all are within easy walking distance of the Empire State Building, the shops of Fifth Avenue and the attractions in Central Park. The Pierre stands out above the rest - literally - as it looks down on Central Park and Museum Mile on Upper Eastside. Those wanting to cut costs but not standards should consider luxury hotels in New Jersey, just a short train ride from the Big Apple. The Robert Treat Hotel offers excellent luxury hotel accommodation in Newark's Arts District at very accommodating prices.

Further south on the US East Coast is the capital city, Washington DC with its government buildings and attractions including the White House, the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. The Four Seasons Hotel is at the posh end of town in Georgetown and is ideal for business and leisure guests in search of centrally located luxury hotels with good amenities in the capital.

The Carolinas, Georgia and Florida are known for their sunshine and mild winters. Popular with vacationers, winter snowbirds and retirees all year round, the sandy beaches and natural wildlife are a big attraction. Families flock to Orlando's theme parks before sinking down on the beaches around Canaveral or Tampa for a quiet reprieve in the sun and surf. For those staying in Orlando, the only place of note to stay is the Westin Grand Bohemian, one of the few luxury hotels in Orlando that treats guests as proper adults and dispenses service accordingly.

The last 100 miles or so are along the US1 Overseas Highway jumping from island to island via causeways and bridges to reach Key West, the end of the line. En route, Little Palm Island is a great resort to stay at, just 20 miles west of Marathon Key. From the private powder-soft sand beach of this luxury hotel in Florida's Keys you are as close to a Caribbean island as you can get, without setting sail.

Unemployment is one of the major catalysts of crime

East Towne

Top 5 Safest Places to Live in South Africa

The large urban metropolises of Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town have witnessed an unbelievable surge in population in recent years, with more and more rural people making for the city in an effort to find jobs. Many of these sought-after jobs have not materialised, leaving unemployment rife. Unfortunately, the unenviable result of burgeoning unemployment is crime.

Refugees add pressure

With states like Zimbabwe and the Congo facing both an economic and social meltdown, refugees have had no option but to seek for the sun elsewhere. The 'Rainbow Nation', with all her opportunities, has become the preferred destination of these desperate victims of war and greed, resulting in even more pressure on the fragile local economy.

Avoid no-go areas in urban centres

As with the vast majority of cities around the world, there are no-go areas in most South African cities but every single one of them is still a relatively safe place to live in as long as you are vigilant and take the usual precautions. These are five places that we think are some of the safest places to live in South Africa.

o Cape Town - Apart from being a leading international tourist Mecca, Cape Town is an exciting, modern, culturally diverse city that boasts some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet. The inner city has seen a recent revamp, with a tremendous amount of international money and influence being spent on its urban renewal. Businesses, together with the city leaders, have made concerted efforts to great effects to keep the city both safe and clean, and the centre of Cape Town has become one of the safest places to both live and do business in.

o The Garden Route - this spectacular area between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on the east coast of Africa is without a doubt one of the jewels of the nation. Apart from its pure lifestyle, many of the towns along the Garden Route are some of the safest places to bring up your family. Golf estates that offer superior security measures abound in this pristine wilderness area and some of the most foremost golf real estate can be found in George and Knysna.

o Port St John's - The Transkei Wild Coast is one of the last remaining, untouched regions of incomparable beauty. Formerly a Bantustan, or black homeland, during the days of the apartheid regime, the Transkei has largely been forgotten by the powers to be. Port St John's is situated on the Indian Ocean coastline and offers a sleepy, sublime lifestyle for the growing family. Schooling may be an issue later on but there are excellent high schools in nearby Grahamstown, Port Elizabeth and Durban. Regional poverty remains a challenge, so petty crime does take place but community programmes have done a lot to uplift the locals and there is now a much better understanding between all members of the PSJ community.

o Cape St. Francis - This sea-side town is situated close to Port Elizabeth and offers a quiet commercial retreat out of season. During the holidays it is a popular destination for local tourists and becomes extremely busy. There are plenty of business options and first-class secondary and tertiary education is available in nearby PE. This is an ideal place for both young and old.

o The West Coast - The west coast of South Africa is sparsely populated, largely due to the fact that it is the dry and arid limb of the nation. There are several small towns all the way up the west coast that are both delightful and safe. Yzerfontein, Churchhaven and St. Helena Bay are probably the pick of the bunch but they all offer a relaxed and secure way of life.

Polegate - East Sussex - Facts About the Town

Polegate - East Sussex - Facts About the Town

Polegate - East Sussex is a small town in the county of East Sussex in England. One of the fascinating features of this town is the fine old tower mill. The town of Polegate is situated on an old road that was built by the Romans. This road starts from Pevensey Castle (Anderida) and terminates in Lewes.

If you take a tour of the northern side, you will find the previous location of the Otham Priory. Otham Priory is an old site that operated from 1175 to 1200. After the site closed, its occuPants relocated to the Bayham Abbey. The abbey was used by monks who migrated from Otham Priory. Located between Bells Yew Green and Lamberhurst, the Bayham Abbey is now in ruins. Tourists travelling along the Cuckoo Trail can see the ruins. The Otham Priory was located in a marshy place that made living uncomfortable. The place was chosen by Ralph de Dene who came from West Dean, Seaford. As a member of the Premonstratensian Order, Ralph de Dene was a Pevensey Castle sub-tenant.

The Polegate Windmill is an easily recognizable feature. The mill was constructed and finished in 1817. The Polegate Mill replaced an old mill that was in use in the South Downs. Visitors to Polegate can see the tower mill during summer time. Volunteers have preserved the tower mill and public access is now possible. A housing estate has sprung up around the tower mill. The housing estate dates back to the 20th century.

Polegate is connected by railway lines between its stations and Hailsham. The railway line known as the Cuckoo Line was built in 1849 and further expanded in 1880. The railway line began as a single track linking Hailsham, but it has grown into a bigger line serving Tunbridge Wells, Eastbourne and Charing Cross. Railway travel is now a bigger part of Polegate that includes its Hastings Eastbourne Lewes station and Cuckoo sidings.

The Cuckoo trail is the focal point of the Polegate village. It passes through the countryside of East Sussex to Heathfiled. The Cuckoo trail is owned and maintained by the county East Sussex. Polegate has lost most of its olden look and it is characterised by modern settleMents which have sprung up among the railway networks. You will find the modern town of Eastbourne that has merged with the Polegate village. Vast settleMents have grown since the 1850s.

Polegate is serviced by many shopping centres which are located in southern Eastbourne and four miles outside Hailsham. Scenic locations for the traveller include the Cuckoo trail and the panoramas of South Downs.
